Opening Plenary in Westminster Theatre
The opening plenary was so welcoming the chair Doug Russell discussed the conference arrangements and updates of Hazards and Updates of Grenfell Tower.
Speaker Jessica Martinez – (Director National COSH, USA) gave an amazing speech she discussed and updated us on the COSH in the USA.
Speakers Dan Shears – (GMB) & Tracey Seward (FACK) both gave very emotional speech’s regarding Tracey Seward’s partner who died at work from an injury.
First Workshop Session – Improving Workplace Inspection Workshops with Nick Bower – Wirral LG Unison Branch H&S Officer
I found this workshop very interesting. We were split into groups of four so that we could discuss possible hazards our colleagues could face in the workplace and to consider which of them to be the most pressing. We then prepared an outline plan of the inspection and discussed best methods to inspect for hazards and who we would inform about the inspection. We also made a list of different ways we could carry out an inspection and then planned in our groups how to report the findings to the colleagues and management.
Second - Workshop Session – Reps Functions & Employer Duties
Another workshop I found interesting was one which covered our role as Health & Safety Reps. We covered SRSC (Safety Representative & Safety Committees Regulations) Regulations 4 & 4A and the employers duties and facilities time off for safety reps.
Campaign Meeting – Update on the Legal State of Health & Safety
Speakers from Irwin Mitchell discussed lung cancer, illness and death at work and discussed how PPE – (Personal Protective Equipment) is so important and how employers are failing and being held liable.
Closing Plenary in Westminster Theatre
The closing plenary was fantastic. All speakers and everyone in attendance received a massive round of applause for arranging and attending the conference. Also Tracey Ayton Harding from Unison National gave an amazing speech on the victory of Unison – the only union to take the Tribunal Fees case to the Supreme Court and win - and also announced the second Unison victory over employers who fail to consult unions.
To sum up this experience was very beneficial to me as a Branch Health and Safety officer. As my first time attending a Hazards Conference I really enjoyed this event from start to finish and would like the chance to attend the next conference as it has been an eye and mind opener on how Health & Safety is so important in all our lives.
Abdul Sattar – Unison Branch Health & Safety Officer
