local government conference 2017

Branch At Conference

Members of Birmingham Branch attended the Unison National Conference and Local Government Conference in Brighton at the Brighton Centre in June 2017.

They included speakers like Carol Garfield from Schools.

Carol spoke  about cuts to school fundingwhich was Motion 42. The motion read that "conference beelived that school funding reform is flawed, unfair and fails to address the funding crisis affecting schools."

the Conference resolved to

support schools reps on funding reform

work with other unions to campaign against the cuts,

help parents and communities campaigns

lobby politicians on the impact of cuts and need for reform

support branches members with a change in terms and conditions

look at the possibility of a trade dispute

look at developing an adequate funding formula to protect jobs.

Members who work for IT , spoke out against the continued privatisation of local government services.

One member spoke about Capita's privatisation of Birmingham's IT as Service Birmingham. Thankfully this is now under review , with a proposed potential finish to the arrangement.

The National Conference was attended by Birmingham Branch members too and it included a visit by Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn who gave a rousing speech to the audience.
