Libraries a concerning trend
Tue, 19 December 2017

Birmingham City Council has at the moment ,been one of the few regional authorities to not decimate the local library provision.

But it seems that near neighbour Dudley MBC has decided to releive itself of all library responsibility and hand them over to a private concern called Greenwhich Leisure Ltd. The staff have been transferred over and there appears to be a reliance on the use of volunteers. In other words people without any "expereince to run finance and things like that" according to local Labour Councillor Ken Finch.

So how long before they get rid of all the staff and want it all run by free volunteer labour?

GLL also took over all of Lincolnshire's Libraries in April 2016. The result? According to the Lincolnite :

A Lincoln library user and member of the Metheringham community hub committee (who wished not to be named) said despite efforts their service is “not the same”.

“We have lost the knowledge of the librarians. It saved the library but it’s not the same.

“The group are having to do fundraisers even though the council is putting money in, but I really don’t know if that will last.

“There are lots of volunteers but they are all elderly and they are finding out that it is a proper job. The opening hours have increased so that is good, but I don’t know if we’ll be able to keep the numbers up.”

Herefordshire has treid a similar thing with disastorous results . Reports of chaotic service came from a Union rep in the county.
